Questions? Here’s our top estate planning FAQs:

1. What is Estate Planning? Why do I need a Plan?

Estate planning arranges for the management and transfer of your estate assets during your life, as well as after your death. A will is part of an estate plan. Depending on the size and complexity of the estate, an estate planner may use other asset planning vehicles such as trusts, private foundations, businesses and/or life insurances.

Estate planning allows you to decide who will benefit from your estate while protecting your assets from unintended recipients.

2. What happens if I die without making a valid will?

If you die without making a valid Will, your assets will be distributed in accordance with the laws of intestacy under the Succession Act, Cap. 249 of the Laws of Barbados.

3. Will my beneficiaries’ inheritance be taxed?

No. Inheritance tax or gift tax do not exist in Barbados.
